Who is the owner of a domain name?

Domain names are technically not ‘owned’; rather they are licensed for exclusive use for a period of time.

The individual or organisation that has rights to use the domain name is listed in the domain name registration records as the ‘Registrant’.

You must be very careful to specify the correct legal Registrant information when you are registering a domain name.

The Registrant contact information are made available in a public ‘whois’ database provided by the registry.
